Rules of Five Card Draw

Image
When the poker boom hit in 2003 after Chris Moneymaker famously won the World Series of Poker Main Event, Texas Hold ‘em was all the rage. But for many in the years prior, their introduction to poker came through a very different game. Five Card Draw has always been one of the games that people would play around the house or at parties. For anyone that didn’t know how to play poker, the simplicity of the rules made it an easy variation of the game to start with. It is one of the earliest forms of poker on record. In addition, it is one of the most famous as any movie that poker was a part of in the pre-poker boom era most likely featured Five Card Draw. Five Card Draw is the game believed to have been played during the days of the Wild West when “Wild” Bill Hickok was famously shot to death while playing. As legend has it, he was holding two pairs, Aces and Eights, a hand that is now nicknamed “The Dead man's Hand” due to this ominous occasion. The game is no longer spread i...

The Perils of Semi-Legal Poker

Image
Daniel Kebort first thought of opening his own poker club on a cool night in the fall of 2010. He and a friend, Sam Von Kennel, were on an expedition. In Austin’s northern suburbs, they drove up to a brick house the color of sand and pulled onto its lawn, which had been transformed into a makeshift parking lot. On the Web site HomePokerGames.com, the house had been advertised as the location of Poker Social Club—an underground venue that claimed to operate legally, despite the fact that gambling businesses have been outlawed in Texas since before it became a state. Earlier that fall, Kebort and Von Kennel had bonded over their shared love of Texas hold ’em. Hold ’em is a variant of poker that traveled from its namesake state, in the early nineteen-hundreds, to become, by many accounts, the most popular version played in casinos around the country; it differs from standard “stud” poker in that players share five cards (they hold just two in their hands) and have multiple oppo...

In No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em Poker, The Shifting Probabilities Are Extraordinary

Image
It's funny, but when I lived in Las Vegas and worked on the air at KLUC-FM, I never took the opportunity to learn and play the game of Texas Hold 'Em poker, widely available at all of the casinos just up the street. I definitely learned how to play blackjack and how to count the cards and I've written about it at Forbes here and here and even here. Now, I'm concentrating on poker, online, and discovering how different it is and how unique. The set of probabilities shifts widely at every point in the game. Mostly in Vegas, I was just working and raising a family and the blackjack was fun to learn and master. But recently, with the thought of advancing my income level, I’ve been working on my poker skills – that is, my Texas Hold Em poker skills. About six years ago, I took a look at the old TV shows that you find on YouTube: Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker and determined that those playing at high levels are not that much different than me, so I began studying t...

ONLINE POKER IN COLORADO

Image
Online poker is not legal in Colorado, yet. Voters did pass Proposition DD on Nov. 5, 2019, essentially legalizing retail and online sports betting in Colorado. However, online poker and casino games were not attached. The last legislative effort to bring legal online poker sites to Colorado was in 2013, and it didn’t even get to a vote. That said, the hope is that legal online sports betting can pave the way for other forms of online gambling, including online poker in Colorado. Fortunately, poker fans can legally enjoy cash games and tournaments online via Global Poker. This room uses a sweepstakes gambling model — and operates legally around the country. The successful launch of an online sports betting market in Colorado might change the opinion of lawmakers in the state and restart the conversation about online casinos and online poker. LEGAL ONLINE POKER OPTIONS IN CO Fortunately, there is one legal online poker option in Colorado. You can legally enjoy cash games and tourn...

Texas Online Poker & Gambling Legislation

Poker wouldn’t be poker without Texas. After all, without Texas, we’d all just be playing plain old hold’em. Without Texas, we wouldn’t have some of the game’s most enduring legends, such as Doyle Brunson, Amarillo Slim, and WSOP founder Benny Binion. No-limit Texas Hold’em made Texas an indelible part of poker. Card players in the Lone Star Star love poker, both in land-based casinos and online poker. This page discusses the Internet poker rooms available to Texas poker players in this Guide to Playing Online Poker in Texas. If you came here looking for how to play online poker in Texas or the tips on the best Texas poker sites, we suggest you read our real-money poker guide. Current Updates for TX – Laws,  Legislation & House Bills Poker players have fought for legalized poker for years, whether in Texas online poker rooms or in brick-and-mortar establishments. In 2012-2013, Senator Rodney Ellis introduced casino bills that included the legalization of poker, but Ellis...
